Old convent in Northern Rivers NSW gets lantern roof makeover.
Up in northern NSW near Byron Bay, this owner builder has made an innovative use of light-weight steel.

The heritage main building was ``blessed`` with a rather ordinary shed-like carport and this new lantern and ventilator is designed to disguise the old boring building and resurrect it in a more compatible style.

It was also required that a troublesome central column could be removed from the old carport. The new design involves spanning supporting light-weight steel beams above the old roof and then adding a decorative lantern and ventilator…cutting away the old roof in parts.

Still under construction in some of the attached pics, one can easily visualise how the building will turn out. New iron on the old roof, flashing and new lattice wall panels on the west create an interesting cage-like structure with a varied roofline. The final structure is covered in exotic flowering creepers.

Said the owner builder: ``Rather than waste this original structure I have been able to re-cycle it and give the side entrance of the house a fun and whimsical look….it`s very useful…it`s a lot cooler in summer…it hides the cars and all for very little investment.``

The things one can do with steel!
